Beautiful flowers, blooming trees and green grass starting to grow is a sure sign that Spring is here. Now is a great time to check your doors and windows for cracked seals and damaged/missing caulk. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, gaps in caulk and weather-stripping can account for an increase of  in your electric bill. Replacing damaged weather-stripping and caulking is a cost effective option for lowering your cooling bills, and don’t forget to change those filters. With the increased pollen your unit could be over worked if you haven’t changed your filters recently. If you haven’t checked your smoke detectors and CO detectors, this is a great time to do a quick check. Replace batteries and if needed vacuum with a soft brush attachment to ensure proper working order. Test each detector by pressing the test button. If you don’t already own a fire extinguisher, what are you waiting for? Every home should have at least one with an A-B-C rating on the label. If you already have one check the indicator on the pressure gauge to make sure the extinguisher is charged and ready when you need it. (Please note that if your fire extinguisher is more than six years old it should be replaced). Before the weather gets too hot, think about pressure washing the exterior of your home, porch, deck, driveway and walkways. This is also a great time to check for cracks as well as any structural issues that need your attention, a minor repair now will save you from a costly repair in the future. You may also find tears or holes in screening that will require repair. Take the time to repair or replace screening before the warmer weather brings unwanted visitors.
