Tips and ideas
Beautiful foliage and falling leaves means it is also time to check your gutters. It is important to keep your gutters clean and free of debris so they can do their job properly. By diverting water from your home’s exterior and foundation walls it can prevent foundation issues as well as costly damage to surfaces.
Now is also a great time to check all of your doors and windows for cracked seals and damaged/missing caulk. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, gaps in caulk and weather-stripping can account for an increase of 10% in your heating bill. Replacing damaged weather-stripping in a cost effective option for lowering your heating costs and keeping your house comfortable in the coming cold weather months.
If you haven’t checked your smoke detectors and CO detectors, this is a great time to do a quick check. Replace batteries and if needed vacuum with a soft brush attachment to ensure proper working order. Test each detector by pressing the test button. If you don’t already own a fire extinguisher, what are you waiting for? Every home should have at least one with an A-B-C rating on the label. If you already have one check the indicator on the pressure gauge to make sure the extinguisher is charged and ready when you need it. (Please note that if your fire extinguisher is more than six years old it should be replaced).
